| Hi, My name is Bree Maier, I am the founder and coach of the Sarasota Surge running team. My running background goes back to the old freshman 15 lbs, which in my case was closer to 25 lbs. I started running to lose weight at the end of Nursing school, and was hooked from the start. Having very little experience with athletics, I jumped in head first without the understanding or knowledge of my new hobby. Within 2 months I was getting ready for a half marathon. That race was quite an eye opener; I finished the race and started having pain in my hips. The problem did not heal over the next couple of months, so I quit running for close to a year. The following year I was talked into doing a 5k. I was out of shape and it was miserable, so I decided I was going to start running again, but this time learn more about this sport, and my body. I have been reading and studying everything I can get my hands on ever since. Over the last few years, I was part of a prominent running club in Eugene OR, which was my home until 2004. I had a great coach/mentor. During my time with the club, she shared her knowledge and passion for running with me. Late in 2004, many changes took place. I picked up and moved 3000 miles across the United States to get married and start a new chapter in life. My running was put on hold while I settled in to my new surroundings. All of my hard work and training started to deteriorate. Luckily for me, my husband is a Triathlete, and a great motivator! As I started to think about training and competing again, I really couldn't find consistent training partners and workouts in the Sarasota area to help motivate me. In the summer of 05, I started hitting the track with a couple of triathlete/runner friends. I realized that Sarasota was in need of a more training specific type of club, and Sarasota Surge was born! |
